About Ballston Lake, NY

Ballston Lake, nestled in Saratoga County, New York, is a hamlet rich in history and natural beauty. The area was first settled in 1763 by brothers Michael and Nicholas McDonald, who established a cabin near the lake’s western shore. In 1770, Reverend Eliphalet Ball, a Presbyterian minister from Bedford, New York, relocated to the area with his family and congregation, acquiring land from the McDonald brothers. The town was named “Ball’s Town” in his honor, a name that eventually evolved into Ballston Lake. The lake itself, originally called “Shenantaha” by Native Americans, meaning “deep water,” was formed over 12,000 years ago by glacial activity and was once part of the ancient Mohawk River system.

Today, Ballston Lake offers a blend of recreational activities and historical charm. Visitors can enjoy parks like Anchor Diamond Park and Jenkins Park, which provide trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas . The Veterans Bike Path, accessible from Route 146A and Outlet Road, offers a scenic route for biking and walking. For those interested in local history, the area once hosted Forest Park, a trolley park established in 1904 that featured lake excursions, a dance pavilion, and various amusements before closing in 1927 . Ballston Lake continues to be a community that values its rich past while offering a variety of activities for residents and visitors alike.
